unquiet nights

i picked up a shovel
and dug a deep hole
out back by the edge
of the wood
and
i buried your memory
wrapped in my tears
in that unmarked grave

every blue moon
your ghost returns
uninvited unwanted
and
slips into my dreams
silently scattering
seductive visions
of the impossible

perhaps someday
your shade will rest
if not in peace then in
immobility
and
my sleep shall
turn from darkness
limned with regret
to restoration

Hindsight, as they say—well, I know I have many backward glances, asleep and awake. Great one, my friend!

  • Don’t’ we all, Joe, thank you.
