hell's orchestra

there’s an orchestra in hell
that plays for Satan’s amusement
he doesn’t care that they’re out of tune
because everything here
is skewed in the spiral
of eternal damnation

he laughs
with the closest approximation
to delight that he can fashion
as they stand before him
dead faces contorted
into a semblance of joy

there’s no telling
what sins sufficient
to condemn them
to entertain the ungrateful
night after night
or is it day
there’s no telling
stain their souls

but here they stand
dressed to the nines
all smiling and grimacing
eyes glowing otherworldly
ready to play some red-hot music
on their red-hot instruments
in the red-hot fires of hell
