coward's confession

i am a prisoner of my fears.
whatever happened
to that girl who was fearless,
afraid of nothing
but immobility?
she has receded,
nothing now but a shadow
taunting me
out of the corner of my eye.

courage never called on
is like meringue –
frothy, insubstantial –
that meeting adversity
melts away to nothing.
i sit alone,
afraid to dream,
afraid to move,
afraid to live,
and like meringue
let sit too long
i too, if fear wins out,
will surely melt away.

i must reclaim courage,
i must reclaim hope
and climb out of this pit
and, like the phoenix,
rise again.

And you will – no matter where you are – the human spirit is always stronger than we believe it to be and is designed to triumph. Believe. xx

  • Thanks for the affirmation, Jane,
