i really should be way beyond this now
the flutter in the heart
the crazy mix of anticipation and fear
every time we speak i feel like
i’ve been lifted high, then flung
against barbed wire
every word a sharp bit of steel
biting my flesh
bringing forth bright drops of blood
blood so red and hot it feels like
fire on the soul
i can’t wear your armor
it’s far too heavy
it oppresses me with judgment
still you haunt me
i can’t pretend
i’ve taken off that collar yet

Honest and true. I know with me, the past does haunt from time to time, the collars we place on ourselves and those placed on us by others not easy from which to shake loose. Heartfelt read. Outstanding write!

  • Many thanks as always, Joe. I always appreciate your insights.
