Counting Stars

Out I wandered, as I often do,
to sit and think and dream
in the dark of night.
I find comfort in the curtain of the sky.
Sometimes I try to count the stars
although I know they are unquantifiable.

This night, however, was different.
When I turned my head up
to begin my enumeration
there were just a few visible
to the frail human eye unaided,
hanging like pearls
strung on an unseeable silken web.

One, two, three…
I counted all I could see.
Nineteen.
I wondered for awhile
on why such a small number,
with each so distinctly glowing,
and finally realized what should have been
immediately obvious.

There was a star, shining,
for every year of your life,
and I smiled to know
that even the cosmos was celebrating
the wonder that was you.
