The Gift

The package that you sent arrived today,
My eager fingers tore the tissue off,
And there inside the careful wrapping lay
Your heart – so unimaginably soft.

How brave of you to send it all this way
Not knowing certain what its fate might be!
The gift you give means more than I can say,
Would my heart in return speak clear for me?

And do you have the wish to willingly
Hold close my heart forever and a day,
As I will hold yours – gently, faithfully –
Until the last stars fade and fall away?
