Greenery highlights the combination of rusticity and modernism on this street corner in Ventmiglia in the province of Palermo, Sicily, the home of maternal family ancestors. Note the woman peeking out from her doorway.

The town’s official name is “Ventimiglia di Sicilia” to differentate it from the city of Ventimiglia in the Ligurian region. Sicilians call it Calamigna.

Thanks to my cousin Tulligreta for the photograph from which this is painted in digital oils.

Hi RC; great shot. I was born and raised in the US, but my grandparents were from Sicily. I’m curious, where in Sicily is this?

  • Thanks! I didn’t shoot it, only edited and painted it… It’s in the Province of Palermo, close to the northern coast of the island.

Very interesting painting it would almost be timeless if you had touched out the air conditioners

  • True, but I wanted the contrast of modernity with the ancient.
