Flesh is cheap and spends so easily,
purchasing pleasure, purchasing warmth,
a bit of comfort here and there,
especially when no demands are harnessed
to the heart.
The coins flow freely, glinting in the dark.
Sometimes the aftermath is vain regret,
sometimes satisfaction guaranteed.
No matter which, no matter what,
the consequence remains the same.
The hungry heart is never filled,
no appetite appeased,
but, prowling ceaselessly, consumes
whatever it can find:
a morsel here, a morsel there,
some sweetness can be found, but always
tinged with the aftertaste of bitterness
on the tongue, fading fast, mere froth, meringue;
no solid sustenance to feed the spirit
when the world grows dark.
How long can one’s eyes linger at the feast
without one’s vision blurring in disgust?
How long can one’s heart filter out the beast
before it’s drowned in dull despair and dust?
