preparing to fly
she lays down in her softly welcoming bed,
relieved to feel the embrace of satinfinished sheets
on her weary shell. each
strips a little more of the shiny fairydust of optimism
from her spirit.
soon, she thinks,
my eyes will glaze with resignation,
my flesh will dry to dull desiccation.
i won’t remember being happy, feeling loved,
necessary to someone else’s existence.
and knowing this –
that denuded of that dream she may as well be dead –
she almost eagerly awaits the morning
that she finds it impossible to rise from the tangle
of the only warmth she has –
her kingsize field of dreams
where her long-gone lover’s ghost is always present.
