So Silent Be
Words tremble on my tongue, but this I know:
were I to speak them it would be the end.
So silent be, I whisper soft and low.
I can be patient since it must be so;
on this, I realize, I must depend.
Words tremble on my tongue, but this I know.
I hold so many gifts I would bestow
if e’er the giving of would not offend.
So silent be, I whisper soft and low.
But hard it is to damper that sweet glow
that rises from the heat I can’t transcend.
Words tremble on my tongue, but this I know.
Some later day, perhaps, when trust will grow
to conquer all suspicion, you’ll unbend.
So silent be, I whisper soft and low.
For were I honest-spoken you would go,
and lose me one I wish were more than friend.
Words tremble on my tongue, but this I know.
So silent be, I whisper soft and low.
