Midlife Passage

Lashing myself to the mast of independence,
ready to brave the tortured depths unmapped on any globe,
wild winds whip my hair back from my face,
affording an excellent view of that far unknown horizon.

Can this bold barkentine withstand the heavy seas
to make port intact,
or will she break apart,
wormeaten hull too long in drydock
hoisted high on land?

Having fitted her with needful things for voyaging,
there is no way to know this
other than to chart the course with compass card
and spyglass trained to pick out constant stars
that light the journey home.

And if she splits and sinks to anonymity
cradled in the arms of the trident god,
log lost to legend lore,
it will not matter much to many;
just a faithful handful standing somewhere
on that shore,
waiting,
arms outstretched in welcome
to embrace the sister sailed from forevermore.

How wonderful, GIne – how long will you you be in Egypt. I always regretted not going there while I was in Israel, but couldn’t get anyone to go with me. Are you going by yourself?

  • Since I wrote this the trip has had to be postponed, although I am still going. I was going to go in January or February, but will now likely be headed there in July…HOT! I will be staying with friends there and well taken care of.

I was in Israel in February once, thought I would freeze to death, they don’t have central heating there and it was so cold and rained most of the time. Maybe Egypt in July is better

  • Oh it’ll be115 in the shade, but I’ll go anyway,

Once again you have done something stunning with a snapshot dear friend, bravo!!! Take a big hat, loose clothing and lots of patience with all the vendors in Egypt Gina, say ? ? ? which means “I have no money” and you will get a lot of sympathy and commiseration instead. I will tell you how to say it when we chat next :-) oxoxox

  • LMFAO…the part about having no money is so true! But the trip has been postponed to sometime later in the year, lol. SO glad you like what I’ve done to Pringle Bay! xoxoxo
