A section of the ruins of King Herod’s bath house at his palace complex in Masada, Israel, showing his thermal bath tub.

The bath house at Masada was built with pipe in the walls to circulate warm air; the same was accomplished for the floors by piping incorporated into the supporting columns underneath. The design was elaborate, architecturally and aesthetically, as well as functional. Note the remains of the murals on the walls; because Judaic law forbade craftsmen from creating images of of living things, the murals were geometric rather than representational.

Digital tempera grunge with a 3-D underlayer; from a photograph by friend and photographer Stephanie Moore; you may know her as shulie. Thanks, sweetie!*
