Also known as a ‘Gloucester fisherman’, the ‘Dunton’ was built in and launched from Essex, Massachusetts in 1921. She was one the last of her type not to be outfitted with an engine, initially relying solely on sail power. The design of the Gloucester fishermen made them the fastest fishing vessels in the world, and the ‘Dunton’ is one of a handful of these ships remaining in the US. In 1923 a 100 hp motor was installed, but when she was acquired by Mystic Seaport in 1963, the ‘Dunton’ was restored to her original design.
