It would be a rude awakening for us 21st century inhabitants to have to live with oil lamps for illumination.

The dim interior of this hallway is typical of a 19th-century house. The only available light is what streams in from the doorway of the sitting room. Only in unusual circumstances would the sconced hallway lamp been lit during daylight.

Digital oils painted from an original photograph shot in Mystic, Connecticut, August 2009.*
