Study of an 18th-century square piano. This one, on display in the Isaac Stevens House in Wethersfield, Connecticut, is further evidence of the level of comfort and luxury the family enjoyed thanks to Isaac’s successful leather-working business.

The keyboard spans four-and-a-half octaves and the keys are layered with ivory; the instrument was likely made in England, perhaps by a German craftsman, for the design of the square piano was perfected in Germany and Austria.

Digital oils from an original photograph shot in June 2009.
