tattered rag

i had a satin dress
all the colors of the rainbow
with sleeves so tight
they zippered wrist to elbow
the skirt caressing waist
then flowing over hips
glittering fish scales
to the ankle

i want to be that fish
and swim away

gone is the soft satin that
onceuponatime
was the fabric of life
now i am caressed
by the rough unforgiving cloak
of the ugliness of the now

i want to be that fish
and swim away

but i am caught in a tide pool
coated with a slick of grief
i spin helpless
round and round
in a simulacrum of existence
oh for a fireball sun to dry it up

i want to be that fish
and swim away

darkness stains the birth of days
humanity like that dress
a tattered rag of distant memory
now it’s every man for himself
women and children last
o america
o world

i want to be that fish
and swim away
