the hell of alone

in the dark
music sobs in the background
but not as loudly
as my hurting heart

we are born alone
we die alone
there’s no reason
for us to live alone in between
but sometimes
it just falls out that way

i live in the hell
of alone
it seems my curse
to find and lose
time and again

my child is dead
my family unknown
my men have long fled
and my life
such as it is
a desert of unending sameness

i look in mirror
and love who i see
i bear solitude well
but that is not the same
as night after night
of nothing

i speak aloud to a silence
as unforgiving
as the grave
i am losing the gift
of conversation
because walls don’t answer

i do not seek pity
i merely say what is
you need not touch me
you need not love me
but sweet solace and a smile
would not go amiss
