read me

i’d like to get lost in a book.
in fact i’d like to slip ‘tween
its covers and
be the book –
a cautionary tale for dreamers
on how not to live.
stardust and visions
are a poor steady diet
for the fickle and harshness
of real.
read me, oh dreamer,
and learn what transpires
when you refill the beaker of hope
again and again.
it becomes bitter poison
and best left untasted.
stop dreaming
and fit yourself well
for the world as it is,
or become what i am:
an observer, not living,
who watches, retreating,
unfit for the grind that is life.
