Watercolour and HB Pencil on Arches Cold-pressed Watercolour Block.
Shhhh… quiet or he’ll know we are here!
I watch from my wicker arm-chair on the terrace as 3 children play hide and seek in the yard below.
The boy, head bowed over his arm is counting. He is up to 66.
Once in a while he peaks under his armpit.
The 2 girls, one perhaps 5, the other no more than 8 scurry trying to find somewhere to hide.
The youngest just chases after the older one, seeming in a panic.
69, 70, 71…The oldest, finding one hidey-hole squeezes in;
The youngest crams in, head first, but her butt sticks out like a sore thumb.
75, 76, 77… They tumble over each other to scramble behind a large plant-pot in a corner of the yard.
82, 83, 84… The larger girl disappears, they squabble in whispers.
87, 88, 89… Head first the waif-thin child pushes, between the pot and the hole left-over under the feet of the first.
93, 95, 97… The boy skips numbers and is already turned looking for them.
100 He cries out… Here I come, Ready or not!
Glancing down I hear a muffled: “Shhhh… quiet or he’ll know we are here!”
