Storyline:
‘Lolani (Royal Hawk)
Pencil and Watercolour on Arches, Cold-pressed, 300g/m Watercolour-block
16”X 12”
She takes the Lei from her neck and with a twirl tosses it into the swell.
She raises her hands and stares into the horizon.
Swaying her hips gently she sings the Song of the Tree-Shell to Laka:
Kahuli aku, (Trill a-far,) Kahuli mai, (Trill a-far,)
Kahuli lei ula, (A dainty song-wreath,) Lei akolea. (Wreath akolea.)
Kolea, kolea, (Kolea, Kolea,) Ki’i ka wai, (Fetch me some dew,)
Wai akolea. (Dew from pink akolea.)
The wind runs through the flowers on Diamond Head and picks up the scent from the best blooms.
The gentle fingers of breeze, tickle her as they wrap her in an invisible cloak of perfume, once around her shoulders, then tying it loosely to her tiny waist.
She cackles with laughter.
The sea is pleased and not to be undone, makes the waves dance to her song, mimicking her swaying.
Her eyes smile, the wind lies at her feet as she sits cross-legged on the rocks and chats with Laka.
Laka nods to the hula at ‘Lolani’s side and whispering poetry, much like the wind, motions her to dance and twirl with the hoop while Laka keeps time with poetry in the rustling of the leaves while tossing flower-petals in the breeze.
They both agree it was a lovely dream
