This sculpture in Norwood, Adelaide is a series of rings of different sizes with inscriptions around the inside of the rings with stories of people’s memories of living in Norwood, or who have lived there. At night they are illuminated in different colours, which is quite striking against the silver of the rings.
I am quite fascinated with these rings, as you can see by the various images of them, especially when experimenting with moving the focal length on a long exposure. The results are always different.
Originally I didn’t think much of this image and considered subjecting it to some post processing in iphoto by toning down the highlights a touch, sharpening the image somewhat to make it pop and play with the contrast – however I am glad I didn’t. Thanks for all the amazing feedback – very much appreciated :D

Sensational effect Helen! Really like it. The pieces you are photographing remind me of some of Jenny Holzer’s LED work

  • So glad you like it Dylan – thanks! I see what you mean with the Jenny Holzer reference – I had to google her and glad I did! Such interesting work :)

I think it’s awesome!! Didn’t realize it was lit up at night. Cool.

  • Thanks Wendi :) There are street and car lights lighting up the area but the rings are lit up on the inside rim with different colours lighting up the stories – very cool indeed. The extra long exposure here probably makes it brighter than it is as well. Glad you like it Wendi :D

This is a great picture. You used a technic that I really like to see (I haven’t tried it yet as I haven’t found the proper subject)Congrats

  • Thanks Dora – gald you like it :) I really enjoy doing this effect for the varied results and use many different subjects, mostly lit subjects at night but recently did a tree at sunset which was interesting! Good luck with trying it and I’d love to see what you come up with :)
