A visit to the small town I spent the first few years of my life in. The place where life made sense. A happier time in my childhood before my world turned upside down and spun out of my control. A place where I belonged.

Home belongs to the following groups:

Live, Love, Dream: , Safe Haven, Spiritual Art and The Healing Journey

I went home today, to the place where as a child I once played.
Nostalgia in my heart, as I made way through the wrought iron fence.
I scanned the stones all nicely lined in a row, trying hard to remember…
I should’ve known, to look where it was overgrown. Been too many years.
With a knot in my throat, I knelt in the wet grass, as I paid my respects to you both, in silence.

This was the first time I had been to see you, and felt you understood.
With misty eyes I stood to leave and I looked back at the spot where you rest once more.

I drove around the small town, mostly abandoned and now run down. Tattered old homes, which were long forgotten, but if I look hard enough I can remember.

Running up and down the sidewalks and meeting my friends.
Hot summer days spent hiding in the shade. Running to grandma’s to get more lemonade.

Memories flooded me, and I remembered the endless hours running free with Tony, my best friend and companion, just a mutt, but my lifeline no less.

I took photos to remind me, should I ever forget. This is where I come from. This little place that is almost gone. This is where my roots are, and where I once belonged. This is where most of the ones I loved and understood still are. Though all I see are grave markers and stones.

I can close my eyes and remember simpler times of years ago. They are with me always, and I am very glad I got to go home this day. I needed to remember and I needed to say. I love you and I miss you more than I knew. Thank you for giving me the best parts of you. I hope you can see… I hope you know I have passed it along and in my children and I see the very best of both you and me.

Ahhh I am sorry didnt mean to make you sad. I was in a sentimental mood and missing some people that I was very close too when I went back. Jumped in my car in June during thunderstorms and went North to Douglas. Went to the cemetary first. My Grandmother and Grandfather are there. My dad is in Enid but I like to think he is with them too = )

Beautifully written, Vonne, and so very heartfelt. It made me think of many things I hadn’t thought about in years. Memories are often wonderful, and sometimes, strange things. I hope you found the resolution you needed by visiting your Place of Belonging. Reading your story was like looking into your soul for a moment, and feeling what you felt as you returned to your roots.

  • RavenSoul replied

Memories, they last a lifetime…they are carried into the future. Beautiful words for your lost loved ones….tearful but with joy infused into your offspring…the future….they live on! Sometimes we need to touch our past to remind us that we are their future….touching moments never to forget!

Touchingly beautiful words and well laid verses. For we are the composite of our experiences, and those from our youth somehow seem larger than life. Cherish the good, discard (but first learn from) the bad, and hold every heart dear. Knowing where we come from helps us to know who we are. The memories of my youth are like touchstones that I bring out and fondle frequently, and many of them I’ve passed on to my kids so that they will better understand where they come from, too.

    Well wrought, and well writ!
