DESTINY The Harp Seal
“THE STORY OF DESTINY
She was separated from her Mother who had escaped into the frigid waters, during the terrifying confusion of the seal hunt. Meanwhile the Baby floated away alone, on a tiny raft of pack ice. She drifted throughout the night, desperately calling for her Mother.
Morning came and found her miles from where the humans had caused such panic the day before. After many hours of lonely despair, the two loving Harp Seals found each other; finally safe from the reach of the fishermen! Reunited again, the Mother in her gratitude, named her miracle child “Destiny”.

This beautiful image and story was created to protest the annual seal hunt and to raise awareness of the beauty and gentleness of our precious Harp Seals. Not only are they endangered by rising ocean temperatures, but they also suffer huge losses at the hands of seal hunters every year. It’s time such barbaric activities were stopped immediately.

Wonderful image. I applaud your efforts to raise awareness of the injustices we enact against those unable to defend themselves. I understand that even a certain candidate for vice president in our country has hunted seals- that alone should disqualify her to hold office. Composition, and treatment of subject are inspiring-someday you’ll have to let us know how you do it… until then, thank you for your peace

Your comments are always so encouraging. I thank you for your kind and generous support of my work. In answer to your interest in how I create my work I use Photoshop a great deal but sometimes it is pure artwork or simple photography that delivers my work. For those works with a fantasy element, Photoshop is my chief ally. Blessings to you, Skye :o-)

What a beautiful image. How could anyone harm such beautiful, innocent creatures? We need to speak up and end the needless slaughter of these beautiful creatures.

LOVELY image! In order to be accepted into Voices for Animals though it needs to have the message included in the image.
Skye Ryan-Evans replied
Hi Crockpot. The message always was with the image but Red Bubble requires us to crop our borders off which was where my message resided. :(

A heart rending image and such a sad state of affairs that these beautiful animals are so very endangered..well done for such poigniant image..love this.xxxxxxxx
Skye Ryan-Evans replied
Hello Cynthia and thanks so much for your kind remarks. I adore these beautiful creatures as well and long to share their story with everyone. So many people do not know or even believe how brutally these innocent little souls are slaughtered for their fur. It’s illegal and yet the Canadian Govt. won’t stop the barbaric practice because in a good year it raises a puny $17 million CAD for the fishing industry. It’s hardly worth the effort.
I won’t give up campaigning for these (now approaching endangered) animals until seal-hunting is banned. Thanks for your input. :o-) ~ Skye

i suppose i’m gonna be called ignorant, and i do support a ban on killing seals for fur and commecial hunting of all kinds, but people, like polar bears, do have to kill for food – native people’s i’m talking about, to feed their families and i think its important not to be too disney-esque in language about this kind of thing.. it’s as much an innocent little soul as the cow i shall be eating part of tomorrow, which the father won’t name daisy or destiny cos he knows he’s gonna have to auction it off at the market one day, the fact that it looks cute, hugely, means nothing to the serious people you / we need to be persuading..just a thought! Anyhow,,, i love the picture.. it is damn cute and very well put together..
Skye Ryan-Evans replied
Hi Simon. Thanks so much for your input and taking the time to comment. It is much appreciated. I hear you and appreciate the points you are making; But in today’s advanced society, the Canadian First Nations people no longer need to hunt Polar Bears for food, and haven’t needed to for decades. They have weekly and sometimes even daily shipments of groceries dropped off in their communities and many of these otherwise isolated communities up north also have their own food supply stores and depots. Hunting the Polar Bear is more about the irresponsible Safari Club International members paying native people for Polar Bear hunting trips and Polar Bear skin and head trophies. Considering these Bears are a seriously endangered species, hunting of these precious animals is ludicrous.
Regarding cuteness, Harp Seals are by their very nature and appearance, what most would consider “cute”. I simply enjoy sharing my work to raise awareness of how they are needlessly slaughtered. No humans need them as a food source any longer and most of the European countries that used to buy the pelts have banned the practice mainly due to the inhumane method of hunting by clubbing, hooking and shooting that goes on in Canada. High quality synthetic furs are also now possible, so the real thing isn’t a viable material anymore. In addition, most of the white pelts are only white because these indiscriminate hunters are taking underage baby seals and thereby breaking additional laws pertaining to their hunting permits. Older seals have a more yellowed coat and don’t fetch the same high prices. Happily, most of the former buying countries refuse to trade in these pelts (unless it is done so illegally on the black market).
It is my fervent hope that in the very near future such barbaric hunting practices will be gone forever.
Thanks for dropping by, Simon, Namaste, Skye :o-)

I am from a Fishertown up north in Germany and my Dad and Uncles were all Fisherman that went out for 9 month at a time to go Fish. My Uncle one day came back with gifts that he purchase in Greenland which were little Slippers made from Baby Seal Fur, and I remember so very well that I did not want to wear them because it was an animal, and to this day, I am so frustrated that Kill animals to make a profit. This is truly the most beautiful Image and Story that I have ever seen.

Hello Susanne and thank you for sharing this sensitive story with us. Even as a child you showed a reverence for living creatures and that makes me proud to know you. I wish that all people could be so aware of how precious our wild and domestic animals are. Namaste, Skye ;o-)
