The Old Celtic Celebration of Halloween

This is the true meaning underlying Halloween, very spiritual and a time to awaken the senses and feel the connections to ‘the other side’, but I must admit…I still like the trick or treating too!

Seen my cool skull?

It is covered in Celtic designs, I thought it was great, bought it at the Nursery! Not only does it look pretty realistic and detailed, the combination of the Celtic patterns and the skull really makes a lot of sense….

Today is 31st October, Halloween! I actually like it and embrace it, even though here in Australia we don’t really get into it, I think it’s a pretty cool celebration.

With Halloween originating in the pre-Christian Celtic Festival of the Dead, I think the Skull looks very appropriate for today. The original festival is called Samhain and celebrates the Celtic New Year.

The Celtic people would celebrate with great gatherings and festivities, everyone travelling long distances to attend tribal feasts with their clans and lasting 9 days, ending on November 1. Huge bonfires roared as people sacrificed animals, fruits and vegetables for the dead souls.

It was a time of checking supplies for the Winter ahead, bringing stock in from the pastures and renewing friendships. There was a spiritual side too and this is where we find the traditions of Halloween steeped…

It was a time to reflect on birth and death, of the need to die with honour and live in the memory of the clan. It is a magical time of the year, when those who have gone before and those yet to be born, walk among the living. A time we respect our departed ancestors and set a place at the table for those who are remembered but no longer with us.

This is the true meaning underlying Halloween, a time to gather, food and supplies for the winter but also gather together as clans and friends while being very spiritual and a time to awaken the senses and feel the connections to ‘the other side’, but I must admit…I still like the trick or treating too!

For those who follow the old ways. ‘tis also the one day of the year on which those passed can freely communicate with their loved ones too. At the celebrations readings and visions were the the main theme, as people came together to contact their departed loved ones and to glean any messages that could help crops or family issues in the coming year. A very important time.

    Nice Skull…
