Artist's Description

The 7th month of the year and the 7th page in my Calendar that will be a 2011 release, July, was renamed for Julius Caesar, who was born in that month. Previously, it was called Quintilis in Latin, since it was the fifth month in the ancient Roman calendar. The famous Roman lived from 13 July 100 BC until 15 March 44 BC. His exploits with Cleopatra begame legendary, here I have Julius Caesar and the heiroglyphs are a reminder of the Egyptian Cleopatra’s influence in his life.

Caesar was born into a family which claimed descent from Iulus, son of the legendary Trojan prince Aeneas, supposedly the son of the goddess Venus. Aeneas left Troy with his family making his way to Italy to found what became Rome.

Many countries celebrate Independence Day in July. July is summertime in the Northern Hemisphere while in the South it it often the coldest time of the year. Extreme weather dominates nature in July. The waterlillies are the flower for those born under the sign of the crab.

The main zodiac sign of July is Cancer and in the night sky as the home of Praesepe (Messier 44), an open cluster also called the Beehive Cluster or the Gate of Men. Stargazers and astrologers have known of Praesepe for a long time and it is also called The Manger or the Asses.

The Moon dominates the sign of Cancer and it’s influence is seen in the feminine side of all Cancers and as it turns the tides, the pull of the water is irresistable to the Crab. The Roman ruby red in the toga is a classic Cancer colour and rubies are a favourite.

The Crab was placed into the night sky by Hera who gave this brave little guy a constellation to remember his attempt at halting Heracles, Heracles crushed it in one go but his heroic effort will always be remebered when we look up at Cancer. The constellation can be seen here.

Cancer was often considered the “Dark Sign”, quaintly described as black and without eyes. Dante, alluding to this faintness and position of heavens, wrote in Paradiso:

“ Then a light among them brightened,
So that, if Cancer one such crystal had,
Winter would have a month of one sole day.

Also as the end of July nears the zodiac changes to Leo, the lion proudly waiting his turn to reign over the next month as we say goodbye to the month of July.
