Profile
Raven Creature has had an interest in art for as long as she can remember, drawing and painting since a small child. She has some formal education in art, and two unrelated degrees, so like many artists is mostly self-taught. Her art has been shown in California where she grew up, to New Orleans where she has been a resident since 2002. Her work is as varied and unusual as she is, ranging from photograph-like pencil drawings, clay sculpture, photography to her most recent love, oil painting. Her work is especially fine and detailed when it comes to portraying people, but don’t mistake this powerful, quiet woman as another portrait artist.
Finding solace in the study of light, color-play and shadow, in the contrast between what is felt and what is implied, she believes the answers to our questions involves compassion and laughter, not complacency. Clear light comes from within the canvas, as inside each of us if we can remember it. Creature aims to show us that inner light in her work, believing each piece alive in its own terms. Recurring themes include alienation, memory and dislocation.
Creatures’ other interests include cooking, martial arts and writing. Her career goals include working as a full time artist and publishing her written work.
