Great White Egret Flying Over the Crocodile River
(Ardea alba)The largest of the white egrets. The neck & legs are very long. The bill is usually yellow, except at the beginning of the breeding season, where it is black. The black line that extends from the bill, underneath and behind the eye is the feature that easily identifies this bird from the smaller Yellow-Billed Egret.It has a slow flight, with its neck retracted. This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes, ibises and spoonbills, which extend their necks in flight.
