The Stalker Has Won! ( Clearwing Hummingbird Moth)

I spotted a few of these Clearwing Hummingbird Moths yesterday. It has been my goal to get a capture of one of these elusive beauties for a long time, but until now they have proven to be quite a challenge as they are quick as lightening and NEVER stay still. Well I stalked this guy around and around the butterfly bush (Thus the title) just snapping away and hoping for the best! When my little dog Julie didn’t scare him this time, (I made her stay inside!) I knew I had a chance. Wonder of wonders I even managed to get him to flit onto my hand for a fraction of a second!

Fantastic capture Sue. Hummingbird Moths have become quite rare in Malta nowadays. When I was still a litle boy (ages ago lol) I remember daily visits by one or two of these beautiful creatures to our class room at school. Pleasant short time distractions! Now I haven’t seen one for months. The most probable cause is the uncontrolled use of pesticides.

  • rasnidreamer replied

Thank you so much Anthony. They have brought back memories of my childhood too. I can remember helping my grandmother pull weeds, seeing one of these and running like crazy because I was afraid of them!LOL Then it had probably been thirty years or better before I ever saw one again. Now I have four or five of them that visit daily. I hope they are making a comeback so my kids will be able to see them often. Thanks again my friend for your wonderful comment and the fav. XXSUEXX
