8.5X11 Inch Pen & Ink with Acrylic Wash on #140 Strathmore Water Color Paper: I was just smitten by a photo my friend Stephen ( Sam) Jackson took of low tide in Staithes and asked him if I could try and paint it. If you would like to see his stunning photo, it’s here http://www.redbubble.com/people/samsalt1/art/55...
Thank you very much Sam!

I am semi retired and love to travel with my 9X12 #140 Strathmore pad, my Sharpie Ultra Fine ink pen and five or six sticks of pastels or acrylics to color in my “finds” Sometimes I get real lucky and my wife Dawn will take some pictures I can use later. I seem to always be able to give some kind of sketch to my subjects or those bystanders who desperately want to give me some advice.

You got every nook and cranny and angle just about perfect Randy. Staithes is such a fascinating place, and I always end up stopping in my tracks when I see that name in a title, whether it’s a photo or a painting. Several artists on RB have shown the world what a great place it is, and now you are among them. Love the colours.

  • Thank you very much my dusty friend, this was the first time in quite a while that I went to acrylic for the colors and not to pastels. I think it was easier to fill in the light, and certainly much quicker.

I’m never sure what the outcome will be when someone asks if they may use a photo of mine for reference and on occasion I have been dissapointed with the end product but you have done a superb job Randy and I am delighted I went along with your suggestion.
The foreground wetness in particular I find outstanding and the tweaks you’ve made since showing me the earlier rendition have made a huge difference.

    Brilliant job !

  • Oh Sam I am really happy to hear this from you! Yes I have been “tweaking” the piece, then stepping back and squinting. Those damn hull shapes I drew over and over, as the hulls are so tilted. The forground came in easy, as I had your wonderful sharp image to refer to, you have such an excellent eye!

Great interpretation Randy. I was lucky to be there just last weekend.

  • Oh Sue you are so lucky to have this area close enough to paint! I have seen your dexterity in painted hulls on the hard and have been amazed at your renditions
