Skim Boarding at Pearl Beach by

8.5×10 Inch Pen & Ink with Pastels on 140# Strathmore Water Color Paper: I took my friend Bo down to Pearl Beach, my favorite beach, just South of Laguna, and this young man was attacking the waves there with the thinnest of skim boards. He just flew across the sand. I hit that ink line on the horizon with some more pastels in effort to soften it. In the original it hardly shows, but my scanner seems to intensify it?

I am semi retired and love to travel with my 9X12 #140 Strathmore pad, my Sharpie Ultra Fine ink pen and five or six sticks of pastels or acrylics to color in my “finds” Sometimes I get real lucky and my wife Dawn will take some pictures I can use later. I seem to always be able to give some kind of sketch to my subjects or those bystanders who desperately want to give me some advice.

Your treatment of the water and sand makes me want to gather the old watercolor outfit and head for the beach. Artistic image. You might consider removing the line at the horizon. IMO

  • Thanks. I hit that ink line on the horizon with some more pastels in effort to soften it. In the original it hardly shows, but my scanner seems to intensify it?

fine work! would’ve thought it was a treated photo. reminds me of some great times doing the same, though we called it “whomp boarding” from the WHOMP of the board going down, as a teenager

  • Thanks. Yes I have heard of the Whomp board and have wonder just what it was.

Magic painting Randy. The morning light is perfect and those colours and tones really hit the spot.

  • Thanks Guntis! I think the ink gives the energy needed; the photo I worked from is very bland in comparison. The sparkle technique I discovered quite by accident, pushing hard on a pastel chip it broke and gave me that great mark. Now I push small chips of white to break, just to make that mark.

Beautiful work Randy! I like the limited palette and the feeling of movement very much. That horizon line is a worry, but if you say it doesn’t show up on the original so much then it is fine. Happy New Year … and I think 2011 will be a great one for you!

  • Thanks so much dear Lynda, only 10 sticks in my little kit. My daughter just gave me a bumch of new ones, just when I’m getting used to a few old favorties, LOL! Happy New Year to you and yours also.
