Procida Fishing Boats End of The Day by

8X10 Pen & Ink with Pastels on Arches #140 Water Color Paper: I had this little pen & ink sketch I did while sitting on the dock in Procida at the end of a day of sailing. I was mesmerized by the reflections coming off the colorful fleet of little boats and the shadows of their bow lines in the water. I found some old pastels last week and I have been trying to get them to work, like my mentor LR. This little harbor in Italy is just 10 miles out in the bay of Naples and has been declared an International Heritage Site, unspoiled by progress and very lightly touched by tourist.

I am semi retired and love to travel with my 9X12 #140 Strathmore pad, my Sharpie Ultra Fine ink pen and five or six sticks of pastels or acrylics to color in my “finds” Sometimes I get real lucky and my wife Dawn will take some pictures I can use later. I seem to always be able to give some kind of sketch to my subjects or those bystanders who desperately want to give me some advice.

I’m very much enjoying this, Randy. Look at this little fleet of boats. Blue and gold. At first I thought it was pen & ink and watercolor. But pastels, wow. You captured that brightness of the sun on the water, how it shimmers with blind spots in the heat. This piece brings back good memories of sitting down on the yacht club docks painting.

  • Oh thanks so much Fran and I have to compliment you on what you are doing with these Solo Exhibitions. Lynda R was having just so much fun. Good Job!

Boats beautiful. Water in foreground I could dive into-wierd insight into painting water Ra

  • Ha ha dive right in its 140 lb Arches and some dust & ink! It’s just wonderful to hear from you buddy. LOVED you show pictures! I wish Dawn and I could have dropped in to surprise you, but we had a fire in one of our rental homes and that’s curtailing our style for the summer so far. I plan to sail with Barrett Weds night and then get the hell out of Hollywood, over to the Catalina for the 4th.

Randy, one of the things I love about your work is, when you add the ‘reality touch’….like the effect you achieved with the bulging still water and the concave and convex reflections of the rope in the water…that definatly deserves
    a BRAVO!
    Cathy

  • Wow! All my best friends are showing up for this little sketch, thanks a whole bunch! What you are saying about the ‘reality touch’ Oh how I treasure that remark! I want to just live that way, reinterpreting little slices of reality everyday to share with my friends. What a wonderful thought from you dear Cathy.

wonderful work, youve combined the mediums so well, love the focus of the foreground receding to the background, the ropes over the water are fantastic!

  • Oh thank you maria! I admire your pastels ever so much. I am just trying to learn what do to do with these dusty things.

WOW and LOL!!!!! You are such a Dag!!! This is absolutely fantastic Randy. You must be very happy with this! Just look at that water!!! Beautiful light and shade, perfect colours, reflections are spot on, and you have a fantastic composition with all the interest in the foreground blending into the subdued background. I LOVE this!!!!

  • Oh thank you so very much Lynda, I am working really hard with your dusty stuff, and to get this comment from you means a lot to me. I have a bunch of pen & ink sketches I am going to go over with the bits and pieces I have left and then I think I am going to have to do a major clean up of my work area. LOL! Your SOLO show was a lot of fun for everyone!

Interesting combination of medium, Randy. I love the scene and your chosen palette. Great composition and mood.

  • Thanks very much bev, your the first to mention it but the limited palette was because that’s all the colors that were in this “starter box.” LOL!
