Maluaka Calm at Prince Beach, Maui
It is a rare occasion when there is no wind blowing the palms, and there are enough clouds over the ocean to create a dramatic sunset at this location. I spent a week’s worth of evenings in this area before the conditions set up perfectly.
Technically this is a series of 5 long exposures layered. I was using a 10mm lens on my little Canon XTi. It worked.
This beach is in an area where there will soon be plenty of new construction, sadly. The “old” Maui is slipping away, and it breaks my heart. I hope images like this will preserve the pristine flavor for future generations.

Randy. this presentation of the subject fits the overall image of hot water, palms, golden beaches etc. This image is stunnig, colorful and strong.
For me it’s a bit overdone (but just a bit) and I don’t seem to like the “smuges” on the water created by (I think) the clouds (please correct me if I’m wrong).
Overall I like this image, and my friend who sits next to me right now (who is a big fan of palms etc) says: “it’s beautiful”.

Yes, I would work the entire thing differently today. I have already blurred the shadows on the water for my gallery prints.

this is just an awesome sunet with great colour and mood. I think the deepness in the 5 exposures i8s great. I have never been there but it is sad to lose all thyese beautiful beaches it is happening all over the world.

I was on Maui just a month ago and I was on this very shore. I certainly agree with you. It is so sad how the unspoiled areas of Maui are being invaded by the “deep pockets.” It is too bad that the Island Fathers cannot restrict the building and keep a certain percentage simply pure and unspoiled. Soon there will be an even greater shortage of pure water, then the end will be in site for the well being of Maui. But I am here because of your beautiful photography and this captured me at first glance. This is a beautiful image and I think the very moodiness of the clouds and something in the stillness of the palms makes this even more compelling. Awesome work!

It is snowing outside right this very moment. About 7 inches is expected to fall overnight, with more on the way tomorrow. This, on top of the already 3 feet of snow we have here.
I just visited this picture to take a mini vacation. :D I pranced on the shore, and soaked in the setting sun. It is absolutely stunning!! I can almost feel the water’s edge on my toes right now.
BTW – I never wear a watch either…. ;)
