Uncle Dan
Uncle Dan Purdy passed away in 2006.
Mister Purdy was a life-long ranch hand on Ulupalakua Ranch, on the island of Maui, Hawaii. He is one of the men who made the Paniolo, or Hawaiian Cowboy legendary for cattle handling skills.
I asked to make this portrait of him one day as I saw him riding his horse down the road, all dressed up. His was a gentleman to the end.
His extended family still works and lives on the ranch today.
Uncle Dan belongs to the following groups:

As I reach in my mind for the memories of old,
of horse and man, spurs, stories told.
of brands, and blood, and burning fur,
of grit, and muscle, and cockleburs.
I’ve been down that road, and watched the men,
seen the fight, in each of them
How they mostly end up broken and torn,
How they worked through sun and storm
Saddle sores and broken legs,
tired bones and endless days,
You love it or you hate it, no middle ground
Not a job that has pretty, tea party sounds.
Whistles, yelps, heavy sighs,
Dusty trails, and dusty skies.
Not many men will work the days
Not too many can afford the pay
Not too many are man enough
Too many just aren’t that tough.
