London Arch is a natural arch in the Port Campbell National Park, Australia. The arch is one of the tourist attractions along the Great Ocean Road near Port Campbell in Victoria. This stack was formed by a gradual process of erosion, and until 1990 formed a complete double-span natural bridge.

The arch closest to the shoreline collapsed unexpectedly on 15 January 1990, leaving two tourists stranded on the outer part until they were rescued by a helicopter. No one was injured in the event. Prior to the collapse, the arch was known as London Bridge because of its similarity to its namesake.

Personal Account – I was one of the last to cross over the bridge, while on a 5 month tour of Australia. My girlfriend and I had just come back from the bridge and were writing postcards in the back of our station wagon, in the dirt parking lot about a 100 ft. from the bridge. Suddenly there was a sound resembling a clap of thunder, followed by a spray of water on our car. The blue sky ruled out rain; I got out to see the missing bridge, and the couple stranded on the remainder of the millions-of-years-old formation. A tourist took a picture at the moment of the collapse, and shortly afterwards, from across the bay; he sent me copies later. Nickinga.

I have always had a love of capturing images and in my early teens took many photographs on my little Kodak camera. I loved the wild open spaces and bird life in particular and longed to be able to be an accomplished photographer. It took ill health and a forced early retirement to re-kindle this love of photography. I am a self-taught amateur photographer who has had no formal training. I take great pride and joy in my work and these days have the time to pursue this wonderful hobby.

Great capture, Ralph, and a whole world away from the London Bridge that I knew and did not particularly love!

  • I always thought that The Tower Bridge was The London and when we were doing a cruise on the River Thames in 2002, London Bridge was pointed out to us and I couldn’t believe it. I was soooo disappointed. Thanks for your comment Kathryn.
