A scene of a roadside dhaba [ where you get food water and beverage] son joins father to help him after the school.
Compulsions of Life
It is less a picture of father and son and more of the contemporary lower middle class and of their contentment despite the compulsions of life.

The tea vendor does not have a happy expression though not discontented. The boy should have been in school or playfield. He is compelled to learn his father’s trade and perhaps support him. His back turned to the ‘work’ and the lines on his forehead symbolise his dislike for it. The firewood smouldering in the stove without flames is a metaphor on the state of their lives.

The brightly lit middle of the frame with dark corners is an expression of the gloom having been overcome with contentment. The pyramid composition symbolises their doggedness. A very apt representation of the lower middle class.

Well, friends, this is one of encouraging comments which is compelling me to post my work on life
these words marvellously explain this picture.
i did get this impression by looking at the father’s face and the unlit log somewhat puzzled me. nice interpretation. the fire has gone out. new opportunities must come up for these children.

I love everything about this tender looking scene…the composition, the tonal cast of light, and especially the sly grin on the boy.
