THE CHRISTMAS DOLL

I’d like to tell you a story
Of a Christmas long ago
And when I think of that Christmas past
The tears begin to flow

I knew we had no money
Yet I wished with all my might
That there might be a doll for me
That long ago Christmas night

We had a little Christmas tree
Which my Father found somewhere
But we had no Christmas baubles
So it’s branches were cold & bare

Then my Mother found some scraps of cloth
And stitched lovingly by hand
Some little Christmas ornaments
Which made that tree look grand

When I awoke on Christmas morn
Lo! What did I see
A single Christmas present
Underneath that little tree

It simp;y said “From Santa”
And I opened it with glee
Inside was the most wonderful wooden doll
You’d ever hope to see

I called my doll Molly
And I knew who’d put her there
It wasn’t Santa but my Father
Who’d carved her with loving care

I loved that doll with all my heart
And treated her with care
She soon became a part of me
And I took her everywhere

As this Christmas fast approaches
I now have all that money can buy
Still when I think of that Christmas past
A tear escapes my eye

Now when my daughter receives that doll
Will my Molly understand
That money can never replace the love
Carved by her Grandfather’s hand.

That there might be a doll for me
