The Ultimate Communal Dryer by Sherene Clow

This washing line, exists along the road between Andamooka and Roxby Downs in South Australia. It may not technically be the “Outback” but it is as close as I have been. I suspect you would not need to wait long to see you clothes dry here – the question though is not of function, but more of WHY? There is no water, no houses, much less washing machines and that is why this shot is so special to me. This washing line serves no great purpose other than to make people smile and for that it is invaluable.
This shot was taken with my Sony DSC-P73

Photography gives me the opportunity to take in a scene that I might not see if I had not had my camera with me. It gives me an extra eye and the time to stop and smell the roses – and then take a photo of them!

A fantastic find!! Love the quirky idea of a washing line in the middle of nowhere…. what a great image! : ))

  • There was also a basketball ring further down! I did prefer the domestic bliss of the washing line though! Thanks for your feedback!

What a great find, and a fantastic shot! I’ve driven on that road – I think it’s pretty fair to say it is the outback :)

  • It is as Outback as I have ever seen! Glad you liked it Melissa.

Great work– great colour & composition ;o)

  • Thanks Cary, it was one of those shots that has sat in my file for a couple of years and I saw it come across my screen as a screen saver the other day, and thought “Hey – that is great!” and so here it is.

this is cool – is it like the beer bottle trees on the nullabor – totally decorated for amusement?

  • Yes, I guess it is (although I am not familiar with the beer bottles), as I am sure there is no one driving out there to use the washing line! It is just for a smile, and smile I did! Thanks for you comment – greatly appreciated.
