Roger Davis
Profile
I’m a retired D.O.D. SEALION (Intelligence and underwater warfare specialist) Who came down with Multiple Sclerosis in 1999 and at Forty, thought my life was pretty much over. To go from an extremely exciting life to quiet solitude and boredom and even depression.
I have drawn and written things my whole life. At the beach, at boring functions, during “down” time at work or school. I would write poems for people for various occasions from love letters, to consoling the loss of loved ones, to every day adventures. And at any time in my life that I was idle and had a pen and paper near, I would draw. I have Hundreds if not thousands of black and white drawings.
After many years of therapy from operations and M.S. problems, I found myself starting to color some of my many drawings IN! What a unique concept (duh), and found a new reason and purpose for living. A whole new life had begun for me, and between that and my faith, I hardly ever notice now, that I have M.S. (What M.S.?)
I’ve always leaned towards the abstract and Have always Loved art from Northwest and Southwest Native American cultures (Haida, Ozzette, Tlingit, other tribes from the Puget sound) other Native American tribes and South American civilizations, such as the Mayans, Aztecs, and Olmec’s, etc. I’ve also felt a love for Etruscan, Minoan and Egyptian art.
I just in the last two years started to do colored drawings and paintings. I’m still rough with my colors and it will take some time experimenting to get it right, but I’m learning and it’s coming along just fine.
I never took formal classes. I like to think I’m kind of a “Grandma Moses” Type of artist , I only hope to be as good as her one day. My art is inspired by Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse, Miro, Pollack, Toby, Dali and the like.
I hope to describe in my art the beauty of the world as I see it. The greatness of God, the unseen dimensions all around us, etc. in a different way than any one else has because I firmly believe that all people have a special gift of some sort, unique only to them. And all artists have their own style, or should.
My plan is to practice, experiment, and create in abundance in the next couple of years, and hopefully open up my own art gallery with my work and other artists presented. I Already have the Victorian home in the center of a business district.
People either love my stuff, are indifferent or hate it, so I work for the people who love it and pay no heed to people who try to criticize or “Grade” my work in a certain way that fits the conventional art world and way of thinking. I’ll try not to compromise my character or beliefs for money, fame or any other enticement. What I do from now on is to try to thank and bring glory to God for this wonderful life. If I should make a little money here and there, that would be great, “A workman is worthy of his(or her) wages”.
I have many good Ideas for art projects, songs, Ideas for film scripts and novels.(Wishful thinking) I also have BOXES of poetry as well, so maybe someday I will put together a book of my best work.
