An Old Boat

An old boat hugs the wall
tightly,
its hold firm and grasping
as it grips the land
to keep the sea at bay,
those clutching waves that bounced its passage always outwards
eased their hold
as the clock ticked
and adventure took a different light,
some shadow
and then the touch of fear,
one reach too far gave way to dread
and gifted ported rest
to etch long days in smooth waters
swaying still in memories
those sounds of twisted, ragged motion
by sharp horns of brittle permission
to pass back and ease,
rest tired arms once lofted high and white
and bequeath a blank mind
now blind
that clings the smeared and greasy wall
and clasps its tales of places once claimed with young belief
but tells no fables outside the grief
beyond the moment,
no sharing a life given way to breaking fear
snatched too soon
this old body
turned back from happy wants
rewarded with aged, grey skin stretched tight on old bones
and rotted planks
as other thoughts nestle deep inside
and rip and taste its flesh.

a great observation on life… where do our brave hearts and taste for adventure go…. i often wonder…..... there’s a sadness that permeates here… is this every man’s fate… or can we some how escape the inevitable….......... writing that makes us think….. good on you…..b

  • Alan Dean replied

sadness for old boats left to rot, showing dreams in decay, and for many aged people discarded to their fears ….. but it’s not all like that, I’ve done some reminiscence work with aging people from remote communities and there are few better storytellers than many of them … and with a love of life too. this is but one tale …. thanks for the read butchart
