From the Third Man to the Ragman
The Third Man film celebrates it’s 60th anniversary this year (1949 ~ 2009)
Orson Welles in post-war Vienna
Carol Reed director of The Third Man, I will always associate as the male director with a female name directing the leading character Holly Martins another strong impressive male with a female name.
However what legacy is left with me is his dramatic lighting and film sets, which gave introduce the monochrome’s twin towers ~ light and shade, and shape and form in combination and fusion for intensity and impact, something which is not lost on my own work.

wonderful shot! very powerful with how sharp and striking and bold the silhouette of the man is! the angle also makes it that much more interesting because its hard to decipher if the shadow is on the wall or somewhere on the ground. the hat is either a touch of brilliance or just pure luck, but it definitely completes the air of the picture. whats the guy doing wearing that hat? going to work? going home? maybe going to finish a “job?” haha, great shot…as usual!

It was ‘the third man’ film that got me into black and white image making and is a pivotal point in my photographic style development

‘the third man’ was taught in my film class at the university. i think anyone who appreciates b/w film or photography will be imprinted subconsciously by the style of this movie.
ragman replied
That is exactly what I have found

I often wonder where my my photography would have been where it not for Joseph Lasker’s brilliant proclivity for shooting so many ‘Third Man’ scenes at night
