Yes Sean, if you are using a large aperture like 2.8 the depth of field will be very touchy for focus distance. If you increase your f-stop to a higher number, you get a smaller aperture, and the depth of field lessens. At your highest f-stop, say 16, there will be virtually none, and everything will be clear as a bell! Cheers, Al

Hi Sean. Short explanation. Focus or better DOF (depth of field = the part that is in focus) depends on Aperture and also on the size of the sensor (a Point and Shoot camera has a smaller sensor but longer/bigger DOF, a DSLR has a bigger sensor but DOF is more limited). In general: the higher the aperture number the longer/bigger DOF becomes.
You can influence where to put the focus by using 1 focuspoint instead of multiple focuspoints. You have an area before and after the focuspoint that is in focus. Also it is most of the times more pleasing to the eye to have a closer point (in this case the left part of the orange) in focus. You might do some Googling to get a longer and better explanation. Macro is fun but it pays off to know how to DOF works.
    Hope this helps a bit.

It’s trick when first starting off with macro Sean but stick with it. The best way to learn is set your camera up on a tripod and take loads of shots with differing apertures of the same subject and write them down as you go. Then when viewing them on your computer you can see the difference in the DOF made by changing apertures. Also on most DSLR’s there is a DOF button which will give you a preview of the DOF before you take the shot but I personally don’t really rate that function, but that’s me, other people swear by this function, I only swear at it :)))

Sean for macro shots use small aperture(high f number) and tripod. You’ll get there my friend. :)

High Sean – I can’t remember what camera you have – think it might be the A100?
Anyway most DSLRs have a small button on the front, usually just below the lens that gives you a depth of field preview in the view finder – they aren’t brilliant but they do give you a rough idea where your foucus is.
I found with the alpha that for macro it’s best to set it on wide area focus unless you particularly want to focus in on some small aspect of the picture

This is really instructive, I’m just a point and shoot too, but it’s marvellous that you’ve posted a question as well as a photo, and received so many useful tips.
