MidFirst Ohio Challenge – hot air balloon festival – Middletown, Ohio

Balloons were cordoned off for the the balloon glow but it made for a lovely sight with them all lit up on cue and close together.

Canon EOS Rebel XSi (450D), f/5.6, 1/15 sec, Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens @ 18 mm

Magnificent! Rachel, I have always considered this to be one of your best shots. The Canon certainly does a very nice job in low light situations.

  • Thanks so much, Clark! Your comments mean a lot to me!

Hi Kathy, thanks! I’m not really sure… I live a few towns over in Springboro. I’ve lived here for almost thirteen years and I’m pretty sure it’s been going on that long (just checked their website and can’t find any info about how long). Strangely, this day/night was my first time going, which is weird because I love hot air balloons and have gone to other local balloon events, and I’ve always wanted to ride in one, but haven’t yet. Some years, we’d be driving somewhere near here, and we’d see the hot air balloons going up and comment that we wanted to go. I guess buying the new camera is what finally spurred me to go! Although for several months, my kids were getting mad at me (they are 14 and 11) because I’d pick the zoo, museum, nature reserve, etc. to visit during the summer, and they’d say “you just want to go so you can take pictures”… LOL, they were right! Although of course I enjoy their company… however, they don’t have much patience with me! :-)

This is just beautiful, Rachel. I know that getting these shots is not all that easy, at least it wasn’t for me. I was the photographer for the baloon festival in eastern Washington in September. It is difficult for them to light up all at the same time because of communication between the balloons, but patience does reward us. This image is just outstanding in capturing them as if they are still. No easy task. This is an outstanding capture.
