We are all wearing Poppies today in the UK as it is Remembrance Sunday, the nearest Sunday to the 11th November. 90 years since the Great War ( WW1) the war to end wars, ended!
Lovely treatment.
Regards Neil
RachelJayne replied
Yes, the Great War, the war to end all war…. so how did poppies come to be associated with that?
Thank you so much for your comment Neil!

This was B-mailed to me a few hours ago by War Group moderator, Michael B.
I think it was written a few years after WW1.
I’ve yet to check the internet!
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead, Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe,
To you from failing hands we throw,
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
- Major John McCrae

Thank you Neil for that reference, very interesting!
Michael Bermi...
Excellent work Rachel!
These flowers are associated with WW1 because Poppy seeds can remain dry on the ground for years and then suddenly spring to life! Poppies were the only things for a while to Grow at Flanders ( The scene of one of the most horrific campaigns of the war )
After a while other types of plants returned to the scarred land, but poppies were now regarded as a kind of symbol for the fallen.
Hope that helps!
RachelJayne replied
THank you, that is certainly a reasonable explanation Michael. I’ve never tried growing poppies but sounds like I might have a chance with them :)
