Like the skin tones! the renaissance painters used to paint all their portraits initially green so the eventual skin tone through layering became more luminescent.

Yes I watched a program on that not too long ago and have read some on it too… I paint also but not with that much patience! They would use many many thin layers… obviously with great results :)
