Artist's Description

View of the 2nd large enclosure of the castle looking east. One of some 300 castles built in Okinawa during the Old Kingdom period, the castle was begun in the latter half of the 14th century on top of a large steep sided ridge, using local cut limestone. It is one of the better preserved castles on the island and is a World Heritage Site. Archaeological excavations are still in progress.
