In reality it is unlikely that the Romans would have allowed the forest to grow up this close to the fortress walls but it makes an evocative picture anyway. Saalberg is a reconstructed Roman Fortress on the Limes line. Built under Hadrian it is reconstructed as it would have been in the late 2nd century.
