Nearly Midnight

I have done nothing to earn
the sweat that lightly coats me
except survive the heat and the humidity
And so sitting, a glass of cool red wine
would polish off this day
if there was any to be had

And I’m reminded, now, of hopes
left, just as empty as the words
that spoke of them. And
knowing well how life derails them
I wonder if they might ever be again
This world would suffer greatly
if it had no mist, no clouds
Words and hopes are like that, too

And since the reaper’s yet to find me
as soon as I am finished here
another simple pleasure waits for me
Supple and naked, sleeping lightly
and I will go to her and I will hope again
tomorrow. Maybe then I will find
a glass of cool red wine and work
at molding my hope into my reality
