Oh for the good old days when life wasn,t so complicated, i,m talking about modern appliances which on some you have to have a degree in science to operate or even understand them and the manuals that come with them, some of them are at least half inch thick. We used to have a top of the range video recorder, (So the shop said.) What the sales assistant omitted to tell me was how to use the remote, it had so many function buttons on it , it resembled a flight panel from a jumbo jet. I only ever used three, which were Play, Stop and eject, if it was a rewind it did that automatically, to record anything, you had to go through 20 functions, it was impossible. Seeing this minidisc system for sale, i went in the shop to look at it, the salesman said it was the easiest thing in the world to operate, well he would wouldn,t he, he was selling it, the manual that came with it was so complicated it was impossible to do any of the said functions apart from play music.Who writes these things, i,d like to know. Do people actually use all of these functions, for example on my mini disc system you can join several recorded tracks together with each track playing for one minute so you can have a medley of your favourite tracks so the manual says. I tried this and failed miserably, well, i mean, i,ve only got a secondary education and everyone knows you you have to have a science degree to understand it. Washing machines are another source of mystery to me, bring back the old twin tub, i say, now they were so simple, you put your washing in, pressed a button and hey presto 30 minutes later it was done but today it,s different. We bought a new washing machine a few months ago, it has a fine array of buttons and lights, oh yes, lights are very important on a washing machine, all of these are for different settings for different fabrics, settings for water temperatures and spin speeds and thats only half of it, these lights (all different colours by the way.) are for different functions which are on the timer which has lines emanating from it telling you which is the right one, My god, i need a drink after this. Is all this necessary i ask myself, i bet there are not many women out there who use all these things. At least the twin tub never complained, it got a bit agitated at times.( Joke.) Now it,s digital cameras, they can be really complicated, i never knew what an iso was until i bought mine but the manual has two, yes, two pages explaining exactly what it is as all the other 100 pages for the other functions do, whew, i wish i had a science degree. One final question, why does a TV remote have so many buttons on it, the guy who came round to install ours went through the whole menu just to make sure every thing was ok, i was amazed there was so much on it, the info was staggering. I,ve only ever used three buttons, on, off and channel change, maybe it,s just that i,m an old fogie.
