Gday Paul, thought I might mention that tithing has actually been around for much longer than any of our modern christian denominations (including the catholic church). It begun with Abraham, the father of Jews, Muslims and (eventually) Christians.

The system is quite logical and works well if it isn’t tainted by human greed and corruption. In the old testament (before Christ), tithes were given to the Levites (descendents of Levi – who were priests). Levites ministered in the sanctuary and made sacrifices for the people that symbolised and pointed towards the coming of the Messiah (Jesus Christ). Since their work was in the sanctuary, they needed some sort of income (usually in the form of food).

After Christ, ministers still needed a source of income for their ministry and evangelism. Problems occur when funds are misdirected towards and wasted on things that aren’t neccessary (like extravagant buildings, cars etc.)
The whole system relies on both the faith of the tithe-giver + very importantly, the good faith character of those who recieve the tithe.

BTW, there are no “works” mentioned in the bible that will get you to heaven. Heaven (eternal life) is clearly stated to be a gift. Paying tithe or doing anything “good” doesn’t get anybody into heaven. According to the bible, the only reason we can go to heaven is that Jesus Christ died, so that we don’t have to.

My point of view is slightly tainted, I went to school and was taught by a man of the cloth who after 20 years of service to the church had a class action raised against him by 64 indiividuals. All for the same disgusting reasons.
I know they are not all the same, it would be wrong of me to paint them all with the same brush but when you are exposed to these freaks it does make one slightly angry.

Oh and another beauty of the Catholic Church, I’ve been divorced for 5 years now and wish to remarry. Oh, but alas I cannot in a Catholic church. Something to do with having my previous marriage anulled because the catholic church does not recognise divorce. They have informed me the process could take up to 18 months and cost upwards of $600 and i’ll have to sit numerous tribunal hearings and have councelling! ...and the churches decision may still not be in my favour! LOL! I think I’ll look after my own life and marry the love of my life somewhere where two people are not judged by their past but of how they love today and forever.

...and they wonder why numbers are dwindling…

...and there were only two of us in the band so when we played live (in those days) people used to say “it just doesn’t look right!” LOL!

Hey Paul. I empathise with your frustration. Sound’s like some people are exploiting love for personal gains. (Who ever heard of that?! ;)).

Once again, marriage has been around for eons longer than the catholic church or any other “religion” for that matter. And if you believe the account of the bible, marriage was the first institution set up on earth by God Himself (when he created Eve as a partner to Adam).

Best wishes to you and your wife to be. I believe that true and unconditional love is more powerful and enduring than anything, and will always succeed.

Now you have vented why not try to see the good in people?
Yes there is negative in all organised groups. No denying there. Yes many groups need changes. BUT…
There are also a lot of good people out there who are not child molesters or money hungry.
Although I am not a church goer myself I know plenty of people who are.
What of the aid that is given to our community and overseas? What about the organisations set up to help people in the community?
They are believers in God and dont deserve the harsh tones of your negative experiences. Dont punish them all – just those who have wronged you.
Many Christian people make a very big and positive contribution to our community. I am sorry that you got caught up by the negative aspects.
Not all intelligent people need to be non beleivers. You need to forgive and move on.
