The Departure
This is the sequel to The Approach It was captured at the same station in Shepparton, just facing in opposite directions!
Used a Sony Alpha with a 28 – 70mm in B&W mode. Post prod involved contrasting, a little “neating” and a slight crop to the bottom of the frame.

Michael Bermi..., 10 months ago
I like this one better Paul. The negative effect on the other did nothing for me, but this is fantastic. The fact that you can see the exact shape of the train is hard thing to capture. I know from experience. Brilliant work.

Gee, this is a mind blowing image. Very dynamic and you did wonderful things with the dark tones and the light. Trains in the night have something magic to me and you visualized that strange feeling of dark stations and being a traveller too. Great work.

I’ve got to add that this particular freight train was moving oh so slowly while it was taking off (exposure was by remote and i can tell you i had the shutter open for what seemed an eternity but probably was approx. 1 minute) and was approx. 300 mts long. The gross tonage would have been massive and as you can see by the image i was standing pretty close to the tracks and when this picked up some speed the sway of the carriages was a little frightening!
Paul Louis Vil..., 10 months ago
Thanks so much for stopping by Mick and Sharon! :D

Paul Louis Vil..., 10 months ago
Thank you very much Sylvia! :D
Oh, and Amanda Cole asked about the exposure, I’m not 100% ceretain as i was experimenting with a couple of different exposures prior to the train departing but it would’ve been around the f22 mark as i had the shutter open for a while!
Mel Brackstone, 10 months ago

Paul Louis Vil..., 10 months ago
Cool! Thanks PhotoBLoke!
I’ll share it here with you and everyone else too…
Set the camera to B&W, Select shutter to “bulb” and use a remote, use a steady tripod, set up as close to the tracks without being silly, wait maybe two, three or four hours for a freight train to load and then depart, make sure you have your ipod with you otherwise the wait can seem like an eternity, just a train begins to fill your frame hold down shutter release. After taking a couple of test shots earlier i estimated it would take about a 60 second exposure at f22. Race home and upload file, do the dance of joy when the image seems to be a keeper! A little contrast and noise reduction on software and TA DAAAA, there it is!! :D

shawhouse, 9 months ago
oh, man, this is stunning and spooky. and Halloween is just around the corner. Great idea, having the blur start to the left of – not flush with – the right border . Makes it look like the train went from zero to sixty from a dead stop. And you’re able to suggest the shape of the train car and make clear the direction the train is moving. Finest image of this type I’ve seen. Bravo!
Paul Louis Vil..., 9 months ago
Wow, that is one of the best comments ever! Thank you shawhouse for taking the time and being so generous and supportive! :D
